Bart Matheney

Managing Principal

Specialties: Project Leasing, CRE Investment Services, Office

Bart Matheney is one of AQUILA’s founding principals and has been a major player in the Austin commercial real estate industry for decades.

Bart has extensive experience working with institutional owners and corporate clients on high-profile transactions in Austin. Notable deals include the sale of Frost Bank Tower, sourcing the IBM Campus for Charles Schwab, and other acquisitions/dispositions including the Apple Campus, AMD Campus, and other significant properties. Additionally, he has successfully orchestrated the pre-leasing and lease-up of large properties, such as the pre-leasing of JLL Plaza, leasing 801 Barton Springs to WeWork during construction, and re-tenanting 7700 Parmer. He specializes in office leasing and commercial real estate investment sales, but has a hand in tenant representation as well, having represented a number of premier Austin tenants including Charles Schwab, IBM, Freescale, and Dun and Bradstreet.

An Austinite since the 70s, Bart not only knows the city and its real estate market like the back of his hand, he knows the history of each project and his relationships in the town run deep. He has also been involved with Opportunity Austin since its inception and serves on its board of directors.

After building his real estate career with CBRE, in January 2007, Bart struck out with several partners to found AQUILA Commercial. He envisioned a commercial real estate firm where creativity was promoted, hard work rewarded and silos didn’t exist.

Bart served as the managing partner for AQUILA for five years, before passing the role on to Chad Barrett. Bart remains a key leader in the company and serves on AQUILA’s Management Committee. In this role, he works to help define the strategic direction for the company and focuses on service integration and implementation across platforms.

Bart is the heart, soul, and coach of the AQUILA Dirty Bird volleyball team. Every Tuesday throughout the spring and summer, you’ll find him on the sand cheering the team to victory.
